Fulmar Workshop February 2009

A workshop of the Fulmar study group was held 11-16 Feb 2009 at IMARES on the island of Texel in the Netherlands. The Fulmar project is supported by NYK Logistics Europe Ltd and the Netherlands Ministry of Transport (VenW).

Fulmar EcoQO Workshops at IMARES, Texel, the Netherlands
The quantity of plastics in stomachs of beached Northern Fulmars is used to monitor trends in the level of debris polluting the North Sea. Governments use this as one of their ‘Ecological Quality Objectives (EcoQO’s) in which targets are defined for an ecologically healthy North Sea and by which progress towards achieving such targets can be measured.
Data for the Fulmar-Plastic-EcoQO are collected by many different groups. Once a year they meet at an international workshop. Here, beached Fulmars are dissected to collect the stomach contents, and the group discusses the data handling and future coordination.

Stormvogel EcoQO Workshops bij IMARES op Texel.
De hoeveelheid plastic in magen van aangespoelde Noordse Stormvogels wordt gebruikt als graadmeter voor de ernst van het zwerfvuil probleem op de Noordzee. Overheden gebruiken dit als één van hun Ecologische Kwaliteitsdoelstellingen (Ecological Quality Objectives - EcoQO’s) waarin doelwaardes voor een ecologisch gezonde Noordzee worden vastgesteld en waarmee de voortgang in het bereiken van zulke doelstellingen kan worden gemeten. Gegevens voor de Stormvogel-Plastic-EcoQO worden door tal van verschillende groepen verzameld. Eénmaal per jaar ontmoeten zij elkaar bij een internationale workshop. Daar worden aangespoelde stormvogelkadavers onderzocht, de maaginhouden verzameld en besprekingen gevoerd over het gebruik van de gegevens en toekomstige afstemming.
